Of course every person’s situation is different, which may change the answers below. Consult with your provider for specific information.
What is a neuropsychological Evaluation?
It is an assessment that uses a paper and pen/pencil and other non-invasive materials to test how your brain functions, such as your memory, attention, problem solving, academic achievement, and/or other brain-based skills.
How do i know if i need a neuropsychological evaluation?
Everyone forgets things from time to time, but if your thinking skills make it hard to complete daily responsibilities or if they create a lot of stress, it may be time to consider an evaluation. If you are not sure, feel free to call Dr. Obermeit and she can help answer this question.
What can I expect from a typical exam?
These evaluations typically take 2-6 hours. You will meet with Dr. Obermeit or another assigned neuropsychologist. You (and maybe others) will be asked questions about your history and concerns. You may then begin to take several tests that require reading, writing, drawing, moving objects, or looking at images. These tests often remind people of brain games and/or school tests. After the evaluation, your neuropsychologist will offer you a second appointment to review your findings and recommendations. If you authoize the information to be shared, a copy of the findings can also be sent to your regular medical or psychiatric provider.
How will this evaluation help?
Most evaluations help people learn how their brain functions, including personal strengths and weaknesses. You will discuss whether your scores represent typical brain functioning or whether there are areas of concern that may result in a diagnosis. If you are given a diagnosis, you will discuss this with your neuropsychologist. You will then be provided with recommendations tailored to your personal abilities to help guide your treatment and improve your quality of life. If you agree, your results can also be sent to your other providers to help them continue to provide you with exceptional care.
